Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant es considerada una de las bandas de rock progresivo más originales y eclécticas de los años setenta.

Fue formada en 1970 en Inglaterra por los hermanos Shulman, después de que se disolviera su grupo anterior, "Simon Dupree and the Big Sound", en 1969. Junto con Gary Green, Kerry Minnear, y varios bateristas, grabaron doce álbumes a lo largo de los años 70. El grupo se disolvió en 1980.

Sus primeras grabaciones tendieron a ser más eclécticas y experimentales. En 1974, cuando ya tenían más seguidores en los Estados Unidos, comenzaron a simplificar sus composiciones para poder ganar mayor audiencia. Los discos The Power and the Glory y Free Hand subieron del lugar 50 de popularidad en ventas en los Estados Unidos.

Para 1977, cuando la moda tendía más hacia la música Punk y el New Wave, el grupo eligió simplificar todavía más su música para hacerla más comercial. En 1979 la banda se mudó a los Estados Unidos para grabar el disco Civilian, después del cual se disolvieron.

El Lp "Gentle Giant" (1970), fue su disco debut.

Después de este album, grabaron "Acquiring the taste" (1971), otro destacado trabajo, al igual que "Three Friends" (1972), que presentaba a Malcolm Mortimore a la batería. Estos tres primeros e importantes vinilos fueron seguidos por "Octopus" (1973), en el que cambiarían de nuevo de miembro ocupando el puesto en la baterista el galés John Weathers. Después de la publicación de este disco se produjeron las primeras deserciones de peso.

Uno de los hermanos Shulman, Phil, abandonó la formación para dedicarse a la enseñanza.

"In a glass house" (1974), "The Power and the glory" (1975) y "Free Hand" (1976), un Lp que consiguió bastante éxito en listas, fueron los siguientes trabajos de la banda que prorrogaron triunfalmente su peculiar sonoridad.

"Interview" (1977) fue peor recibido, al igual que "Playing the fool" (1978). Su sonido varió entonces hacia posturas más pop, con la finalidad de conseguir una mayor aceptación comercial.

Al no lograr los resultados deseados, Gentle Giant se separaron en 1980, destacando posteriormente el trabajo de Ray Shulman como productor, colaborando con grupos como Sugarcubes o The Sundays.
