You re Not From Texas
Lyle Lovett

Lyle performed this (among other gems) on "Austin City Limits" on a
songwriters special with Willie Nelson and Rodney Crowell. I don t
know if this is even the name, or if it is on one of his records.

Notes: The first five verses use the same chord patterns. The last two
verses uses the same chord patterns (as indicated in the next-
to-last verse. In the chorus, the last line is simply holding
the same chord form (D7), start at the 4th fret, and move up a
fret at a time four frets. In the 6th verse, a similar move is
made going from A7/6 up to B7/6.

/6 /6
You say you re not from Texas.
/6 /6
Man, as if I couldn t tell.
/6 /6
Well you think you pull your boots on right,
B7#9 /6
and wear your hat so well.

So pardon me my laughter,
cause I sure do understand.
Even Moses got excited,
when he saw the promised land.

(Chorus)
/6
That s right, you re not from Texas
/6
That s right, you re not from Texas
/6
That s right, you re not from Texas
/6
But Texas want s you anyway.

(repeat)

See I was born and raised in Texas,
and it means so much to me.
Though my girl comes from down in Georgia,
we live up near Abilene.

As we were driving down the highway,
she asked me, "Baby what s so great?
How come you re always goin on
about your Lone-Star State?"

I said,

(Chorus 2 times)

Oh the road, it looked so lovely,
as she stood there on the side,
and she grew smaller in my mirror,
as I watched her wave goodbye.

(Chorus - chords only 1 time)

/6
Now those boys from Carolina,
B7#9
they sho enough could sing.
/6 /6 /6
When they came on down to Texas,
/6
we all showed them how to swing.

/6
And now David s back in Spartanburg,
B7#9
and ol Champ is out on the farm,
/6 /6
and Uncle Walt is home with Heidi,
B7#9 /6
hiding in her lovin .

(Chorus 2 times)

So won t you let me help you mister.
Just pull your hat down the way I do,
and buy your pants just a little longer,
and next time somebody laughs at you,

Just tell em

(Chorus 2 times)
