Baroness es una banda procedente de Savannah, Georgia cuyos miembros crecieron en Lexington, Virginia. Combinan elementos del sludge metal, progressive metal y el hardcore punk.
Baroness se formó en el 2003, por antiguos miembros de la banda de punk/metal Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. El vocalista John Dyer Baizley ha hecho las portadas para todos los albumes de Baroness, y ha trabajado con otras bandas y sellos discográficos como Darkest Hour, The Red Chord, Vitamin X, Skeletonwitch, Sounds of the Underground, Kylesa, Kvelertak, Black Tusk, Daughters, Torche, Pig Destroyer,y el split entre Magrudergrind/torm para Robotic Empire.
Entre el año 2004 y el año 2007, Baroness grabó y lanzó tres EP's, titulados First, Second y A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk , siendo este último un split con Unpersons.
Baroness comenzó a grabar su primer LP en Marzo del 2007. Red Album fué lanzado el 4 de Septiembre del 2007con una recepción positiva en general. La revista Revolver lo nombró disco del año. El 20 de Septiembre del 2008 la banda anunció via MySpace que el guitarrista Brian Blickle dejaría la banda, e introducirían a un nuevo guitarrista llamado Peter Adams, de la banda Valkyrie.
El 18 de Mayo del 2009 Baroness entró al estudio The Track Studio en Texas, para grabar su segundo LP, Blue Record, producido por John Congleton. Fué lanzado a través de Relapse Records el 13 de Octubre del 2009.
El 23 de Mayo del 2011, la banda lanzó su website oficial, www.baronessmusic.com en donde el primero comentario en la página dio indicios de que la banda se encontraría trabajando en nuevo álbum que nuevamente sería producido por John Congleton.
El 14 de Mayo del 2012, el single Take My Bones Away del nuevo álbum fue lanzado a través de Youtube, junto con un teaser del álbum.
Baroness lanzó su mas reciente LP Yellow & Green el 17 de Julio del 2012, a través de Relapse Records.
Purple is the fourth studio album by sludge metal band Baroness. It was released December 18, 2015 through the band's newly founded label Abraxan Hymns. It is the first album to be released by the band following their involvement in the 2012 bus accident that left nine people injured; it is also the first album to feature new band members Nick Jost and Sebastian Thompson, playing bass/keyboards and drums respectively and the last album to feature Pete Adams before his departure from the band in 2017. The first single from the album, "Chlorine & Wine", was released on 28 August 2015. The second single from the album, "Shock Me," was released on 15 November 2015 and it reached #28 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the US. The album was included at number 23 on Rock Sound's top 50 releases of 2015 list and at number 7 on Rolling Stone's Best Metal Albums of 2015 list.
Gina gleason joins Baroness in June of 2018.
