Sailor
The Girls of Amsterdam.
By Marcel Veltman
This curious British Popband made it to the top of the charts
in the 1970's with cute songs like 'Traffic Jam' 'In the streets'
and 'Sailor'. Beside that, they were among the first ever to use
a synthesizer in popular light music, long before there were
Simple Minds, Petshop Boys and portable Rolands.
This song was on an LP I owned many years ago.
If someone still knows all the words, please fill me in
(thanks calpicker53 for the missing verse)
Am, C, Dm, F, Am
Am C
Beautifull dolls in the windows
F C
Patiently biding their time
G Am
But their eyes looking out to a street full of men
G Am
Who are trying to make up their minds
C
And the lights they keep shining
F C
From eve to silvery down
G Am
But who needs to sleep when you're fallen in love
C G Am Dm C G Am
With the girls of Amsterdam, boy, the girls of Amsterdam
Late last night we were drinking
Down in the corner café
When fighting broke out with terrible shouts
And people were running away
From the cops that came stream in
Trying to bring us all in
But we spent the night in soft, silky beds
With the girls of Amsterdam, boy, the girls of Amsterdam
(bridge)
F C
Some people shout at them, blush them with shame
G Am
Others may call them by silly old names
G C Am
But nobody loves a sailor
C G Am Dm C G Am
Like the girls of Amsterdam, boy, the girls of Amsterdam
Am, C, Dm, F, Am.
And thus the day came creeping,
Boy how the good times fly,
As we watched the girls in the morning sun,
Sadly waving goodbye,
But at least our dreams they last,
Like a sound caught in the wind,
And I for one shall remember,
The girls' of Amsterdam boy,
The girls' of Amsterdam.
